Overview
The museum itself is nicely wheelchair accessible including gift store and restrooms. It had a lot of information on a 2000 year old Roman fort and adjacent village named Vica. Some of the artifacts were amazingly preserved. The archaeological dig nearby was also accessible, at least at the front of it. More of the dig would be accessible in dry weather. It was really very worthwhile and interesting. Hadrian’s Wall is within a few miles and is also very, very worth going to! Ask to drive back and park at the museum for wheelchair access.
Transport & Parking
Ask to drive back and park right at the museum for best wheelchair access. There are car parks, but they are far away and a very steep incline so best to park right at the museum in back parking lot.
Access
Level floors and gentle ramps throughout the building. Paved pathway to the archaeological dig as well
Toilets
Plenty of room to navigate and plenty of grab bars and private sink.
Staff
The staff is very friendly and helpful. As we bought our tickets, they told us extra information on accessibility and how to get to other museums and sites in the area. Also, people with mobility disability get in free.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
It was a really interesting museum and very exciting to be right at an archeological dog.In the area there is also the Roman army museum, Hadrian’s Wall both very nearby and I thought very worth going to. So in the area, there are three or four worthwhile sites to visit all in one trip.
