Overview
St Albans new accessible museum opened 8 June 2018, replacing the old museum which was only accessible on the ground floor.
Transport & Parking
The museum does not have it's own parking, there are car parks in the City Centre or in Verulamium Park.
Access
St Albans Museum + Gallery is wheelchair accessible with lift access to all areas apart from the historic Cells. The Courtroom includes a priority seating area for wheelchair users, however I did not find this priority wheelchair seating area . The museum also provides exhibition text in large print for anyone who may need it.
Toilets
The accessible toilet was relatively easy to find being on the ground floor near to the cafe. There was not really enough room to accomodate a wheelchair and the user, it's best to leave the wheelchair outside as it was a bit cramped with the wheelchair inside.
Staff
There were staff members on the ground floor, one approached me to see if I needed any help or directions.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
I was disappointed that the cells were inaccessible to wheelchair users, they were down a steep staircase and there was no lift that went there. My husband went down there and said that two of the four cells had been made into toilets so there were only two cells to be seen, there was a spiral staircase that went up from the cells to the courtroom. The courtroom was the seating area for the cafe, the serving area for the cafe was in the museum entrance and could not be seen from the seating and tables area. It was very busy when we decided to have a coffee at 11am, by the time my husband appeared with the coffee 25 minutes later I thought he had deserted me.
