Overview
Without doubt one of the most enjoyable Castle visits I have made. Its always tricky to know how things are going to work out from an access point of view and Urquhart exceeded all expectations!
Transport & Parking
Arriving by car we were able to park our WAV (wheelchair accessible vehicle) in one of the accessible parking bays right out side the Visitor Centre entrance. The only tip we'd have about parking is to arrive early as the car parking can get very busy at times.
Access
Stuck down at the foot of a hill by the Loch side you'd think access was going to be a problem but Urquhart Castle has thought carefully about this. I found it easy to get around as a visually impaired person and my pal who is a powerchair user also had a great time. On arrival we received a warm welcome and the stewards explained how to get down to the Visitor Centre using the lift. Once there it was barely a few seconds before another steward came over to greet us, tell us about the accessible route to the film presentation, the accessible loos and the way down to the Castle. We enjoyed the film and the amazing views that you see when the curtains draw back from the film and you see the Castle through the panoramic windows. Getting around the gift shop and cafe was easy with plenty of space, good lighting and level access. Going outside we sat on the terrace for a while simply admiring the amazing views across Loch Ness and down to the Castle. Going down to the Castle was a long walk along a tarmac pathway. We did notice that you could borrow mobility scooters if you needed to. Once down the hill we went across the bridge into the Castle. Once again a steward appeared and explained the wheelchair accessible parts of the Castle and where to get the best view. He then offered my pal a picture book that showed the different parts of the Castle along with explanations and fabulous drawings. I went off exploring the towers and buildings and had a great time.
Toilets
The accessible toilets were adjacent to the gift shop area. They were ket locked but a steward was quick to step forward with the key and open the door for us. Large, clean and functional.
Staff
The Staff here were among the most attentive and understanding that we have ever met in our years of exploring. The attention to detail and the consideration in making the visit a great experience for us was exceptional!
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Simply put .... if you haven't been to Urquhart and you can visit then give it a go ... it was fab!
