Overview

Do not go here. Especially not alone. There is absolutely nothing for the the disabled. Zero. The streets are cobble stones, entrances have high steps and except for modern buildings, lifts or elevators are hard to come by although some older buildings did install them. For example to reach the Senior Faculty Lounge at Balliol College (a modern room) there are tons of stairs. To see a Shakespearean Play at Merton College, there are uneven ancient steps galore. Its and beautiful city with friendly people and busdrivers but very little for challenged people. N

Transport & Parking

0.5

I didnt see any special parking.

Access

0.5

Generally, there were alot of steps and few lifts and few benches.I might as well have been on the moon.

Toilets

0.5

No special toilets.

Staff

1.5

People were always nice. A woman (stranger) gave me a ride in her car.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

No, I would not recommend this place. Given the fact that it is a university, alot of change is required. Ramps and internal lifts might be helpful for starters.

Venue Manager responded to this review

Hi Netty, I am sorry you had a poor experience of visiting the University. I will try to provide some feedback to your review and explain what we are doing to improve accessibility. There are many buildings, departments and colleges that make up the University of Oxford. Many of these are very old and were constructed long before disabled access was a consideration. The University is constantly working to improve access to its existing buildings by adding ramps, lifts, automated doors, accessible toilets, hearing support systems, lighting, and more. Accessibility is an important consideration whenever the University carries out major refurbishments or new builds. The University works to high standards and aims to exceed building regulations on accessibility. The University has an online Access Guide with detailed information about the accessibility of its buildings: www.admin.ox.ac.uk/access. This is a work in progress with more buildings and colleges being added all the time. While the unfortunate reality of historic environments is that there will always be some areas that are inaccessible, this is hopefully balanced by the continuous improvements to older buildings, and the high standards of accessibility of new buildings.
