Overview

Joined the tour of the Commonwealth War Graves in our local Cemetery as part of the Doors Open Day Dumfries & Galloway 2021. Fascinating and informative tour in a peaceful environment , casualties from both World Wars are laid to rest here, including Canadians, Australians, Germans, Italians, Czechoslavakians , Norwegians and British. Talk about various Graves, the work of the CWGC & the individuals buried there. The area of the cemetery where the Commonwealth Graves are situated is reasonably accessible, but older areas of the cemetery dating back to the 14 th Century would not be accessible to wheelchairs. Much of the older areas are on a hill.

Transport & Parking

5

The Commonwealth Graves can be accessed through the main gate which has a large carpark adjacent . Public bus service stops in the car park May also be accessed via the river path. Older parts of the cemetery can be accessed via the main entrance to the church via the main road, some street parking available

Access

2.5

A bit variable , some areas have reasonably even tarmac, other areas not wheelchair accessible. Rough and gravelly & uneven underfoot in many areas. The cemetery is built on a hill, so difficult in many areas. The Commonwealth War Graves are in an accessible area, but difficult to get close to some of them. No seating within the Cemetery for a rest , but there is some seating on the river path , adjacent to the car park The display of military vehicles in the adjacent park on the day was accessible , with the seating next to the car park for a rest

The people running the guided tour were extremely friendly, informative and helpful . One of the ladies with the CWGC called Sehar gave me a one to one guided tour, so that I wouldn’t miss out on anything, making for an interesting and informative visit which I very much enjoyed, so special thanks to her.
