Afternoon tea among the rooftops
Visit date:
Overview
A great spot to take in views of Edinburgh's Old Town, particularly the castle. Tasty food, relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Access was good although can get very busy so would recommend booking in advance.
Transport & Parking
There is a bus stop served by Lothian Buses directly outisde the National Museum of Scotland (which the Tower restaurant is situated above) on Chamber Street. These buses are wheelchair accessible and the 35 goes to this stop. There are also accessible parking spaces available on Chamber Street. The pavements are level and wide and there are two main entrances to the museum that are accessible.
Access
To get to the Tower Restaurant, you need to take the entrance that is on the corner of Chamber Street and George IV Bridge. This is a very wide entrance with automatic doors and a reception desk inside where there is an induction loop and staff will typically greet you. Things get a little bit less spacious when you go on to access the Tower Restaurant however. There are a few tight corners to access the lift which itself is fairly small and may feel a bit tight for some wheelchair users with accompanying friends. No need to reverse out of the lift however as the doors open on the opposite side to the restaurant. There is a fairly narrow corridor to navigate before you will be met by staff, however they should be able to see you arriving in advance. Where they meet you is a very busy part of the restaurant as it is right beside the kitchen, so be aware that there will probably be lots of people moving around. The tables are all low and most have moveable chairs. The windows are long and wide meaning everyone in the restaurant should be treated to an amazing view! The spacious balcony can be accessed through a door to the left of the lift as you arrive at the restaurant.
Toilets
I did not use the toilets when I visited, however I did see an accessible loo on the ground floor beside the lift and the attached National Museum of Scotland has numerous accessible toilets.
Staff
Staff were very busy when I visited, however they were friendly and helpful.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Definitely book in advance as this can be a very popular restaurant! I recommend the afternoon tea - it was one of the best.
