Ruggedised scooters only!
Visit date:
This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Wheelchair, Mobility Scooter
Overview
Nice enough place for able bodied, but very difficult and restricted access for physically disabled. Lots of crazy paved paths, uneven levels and steps mean that many areas are out of reach to wheelchair and mobility scooter users. In fact I would only recommend if you have a ruggedised mobility scooter and even then areas like the kitchen garden will be out of reach. (Despite being mentioned in some reviews, there is no longer a tea room/cafe there)
Transport & Parking
Only accessible by car - through narrow village roads. Drop off point for disabled close to the house/entrance. Then parking in a field about 400m away (across a grassy orchard)
Access
I visited with my wife on her collapsible (not rugged) mobility scooter. Initial access was across a cobbled yard to reception and then to entrance. There are 6 individual gardens, 4 of which are accessible. You have to search a bit to find your way around. There are ramps in some areas but most of the paths are narrow, with uneven crazy paving. There are rough steps into the kitchen garden. Lawns are not accessible. My wife was fairly shaken up (physically) by the paths, and her scooter stalled once on an unnoticed lip.
Toilets
Present but not visited.
Staff
Keith in reception was welcoming but not really clued up accessibility.
