Overview
The Tigh na Mara Restaurant and Hotel is in the village of Sandhead, about 8 miles South of Stranraer. This review is only for the restaurant where we had a very nice lunch (with large portions.) The building is deceptive from the front, looking fairly small but there is a large ,spacious extension at the back where the restaurant is situated.
Transport & Parking
There is plenty of on street parking and a car park behind the building. The car park is fairly thick gravel so I had to help my relative transfer to the wheelchair beside the paved path into the restaurant and move to park. It is also possible to enter from the street at the front. The entrance looks narrow (see picture 5) but our slightly wider than normal wheelchair (26.5 inches at widest) fitted through the passageway.
Access
We entered from the car park directly into the restaurant. There is a short but fairly steep ramp down from the door as you enter. Inside there was plenty of room to move a wheelchair about and the floor had a hard surface making it easier.
Toilets
The toilet was easy to access, being in a corridor directly off the restaurant and having a sliding door. It was roomy enough for a wheelchair and assistant and had grips on both sides. The light is operated by a motion sensor but when we were there it was not working properly so we were plunged into darkness several times until I waved my arms about. I have alerted the owners to this and no doubt it will be sorted. As I accompany my relative, I don't always think about the red cord, but looking again at my photo I don't see one.
Staff
Very pleasant and helpful. One lady helped tug the front wheel of the chair over the threshold to make it easier to enter.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Lovely food. An extensive menu. From The Tig (as it is known locally) it is about 30 seconds able bodied walk to the seashore. Here there is a great deal of free parking on the grass where you can look across Luce Bay. Across from The Tig is a public accessible toilet - a bit tight for space but manageable and with grips on both sides. It needs a RADAR key.
