Overview
We enjoyed a day out at Threave whilst on holiday in the area. We had intended to visit the house but it was closed on Tuesdays and isn't accessible anyway due to steps. It was a lovely day though so we spent the morning in the gardens before having lunch in the cafe.
Transport & Parking
We arrived by motorhome and followed the signs for coach parking, which was right opposite the disabled parking area. There were about 6 to 8 blue badge spaces but when we left after lunch, they were all full, and that is midweek, out of season, so maybe they need some more. From the car park to the visitor centre is left access and tarmac surface.
Access
Inside the visitor centre, shop and cafe, it is all completely flat and very easy to get around. The gardens are accessed by a fairly steep path down. The surface is very good but getting back up was hard work. Once down though, it is much flatter with only a couple of slopes to manage. The walled gardens are fine gravel. I actually found this easier than I expected. The contemplation garden is accessed by a path made of stone slabs with big gaps around each slab. That was much more difficult to get over, as the mud was soft and wet and my front casters got stuck in them. I had to sort of wheelie from side to side. The garden at the end was lovely though.
Toilets
There is an accessible loo in the cafe area and it was a good size and clean. Like the parking spaces though, they could do with more than one accessible toilet, as it gets busy.
Staff
The staff we met were all lovely and helpful and polite. The lady on reception lent us a map that showed the accessible routes around the gardens and she pointed out areas that might be tricky. She was keen to get our feedback when we returned.
