Overview

This venue in Kirkcaldy is shared with different organisations and The Yard Fife uses it on a Saturday and Sunday between 10:30am and 3:30pm. I was invited to a family session to promote Euan’s Guide.

Transport & Parking

There is a small car park at this venue. When I arrived there were two cars already there already and once I got out of the car and up the ramp to the venue my carer had to straighten up my car. I’m not from the area so I’m not sure what the public transport is like nearby.

Access

There is a built concrete ramp leading up to the venue which means that a wheelchair user is able to access it. If I remember correctly you have to manually open the entrance door from the outside but there was a push button on the inside to automatically open it. Inside the venue it is all secure due to being used for children with autism so they are safe and it is all open planned, except for the kitchen to be safe. There is a large play area down a ramp where all the main toys are, there is an area up the ramps with tables where people can have their lunch and then behind there is a lovely quite sensory room. Even though The Yard don’t use this venue all the same time they use the space very well. Past the main play area there is an outdoor secure play area that you can access with a concrete ramp.

Toilets

There is a changing bed and portable hoist in the disabled toilet however, if you were to hoist out of your wheelchair you wouldn’t be able to do this with the door closed as there is not enough space in the disabled toilet. If the bin was moved in the disabled toilet you would be able to transfer from the left hand side of the toilet from a wheelchair. There are plenty of grab rails around the toilet however, I do feel like the toilet roll holder is quite far away from the toilet so it would be difficult to reach. All in all if the disabled toilet was bigger it would be great as you would be able to easily transfer to the toilet from a wheelchair and use the hoist with the door closed.

Staff

All the staff that I interacted with at The Yard were very welcoming and friendly.
