Overview
The Victorian Market sits in the centre of the city and is a short distance from the railway station. A large building in which there are corridors of old fashioned styled shops. It makes for an interesting walk around and is great if the weather outside is not being kind.
Transport & Parking
Getting to the Victorian Market is easy as it has entrance on four compass points. You can come out of one entrance and be near the railway station. Leave by another and the buses stops are outside the door or perhaps take the route that places you in the Main Street that runs from the river up toward the modern Eastgate Shopping Centre.
Access
We enjoyed our visit to the Market as there were so many different shops to see. All easy to get to and in see what's on offer. We were impressed by the shoe shop which was one of the few that had a step - on the door was a notice saying they had a wheelchair ramp and alongside on the door pillar a bell to ring to summon assistance. We loved the variety to be found. A favourite was the fishmonger's where there were so many different species laid out on the slab in the window. Moving on there were folk selling all sort of things from flowers, souvenirs, jewellery, through to shoes, cards and coffees. It was easy to wheel around between the shops with wide street like paths.
Toilets
We were surprised to find tucked away in a corner a fabulous accessible toilet. Access was via a RADAR key and a notice on the door giving instructions where to get help if you didn't have a key. It was beautifully warm, very spacious, and well appointed.
Staff
Although not expecting to meet anyone from the market we did meet a gentleman who helped us with the accessible toilet. The folk in the many shops were friendly and welcoming.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
An odd blast from the past that was both curious and atmospheric. We loved visiting and it'd be a great place if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the Main Street.
