Overview
The Open Door is a Community Resource based in Morningside Road in the South West of Edinburgh the near the famous old Morningside Clock. The Open Door is on the northbound side of Morniningside Road next to the Bank of Scotland. The cafe is on street level with no ramps or steps, there is a lower meeting room, utilised by the local community council, surgeries for national MP and MSP, local literary and art groups singing groups and other local activities, access to the lower is via stair lift. The Door offers opportunities for people in the Morningside and surrounding areas to meet and chat and even reminisce. There is ample parking available, plus excellent bus provision. On offer to regulars and anyone passing by is a menu range that is prepared and made in house. There are hot and cold foods, drinks with a selection of home made tray bakes available 5 days a week. It’s home made food, simple and straight to the point and that’s what those popping in say. Supporting and promoting the community who are most in need is there prime role to those who need it, but the Door has become a broader platform than this over its 36 years. As so often the case, it’s small but effective resources like the Door that often are the first places people call on for help.
Transport & Parking
It’s a busy main road to Morningside Road that connects up with Edinburgh City Bypass, but there is available parking and an excellent bus service there are 4 bus stops within 50m of the Open Door, 11, 15,16, 36, 38 all operate. Edinburgh buses including the single deck 36 and 38 have low level floor operation,, wheelchair and mobility seating. There is parking by mini bus for community groups attending the Door.
Access
Ground level entrance hand and grab rails, cafe and toilet on same level, there is ample room for wheelchair access with no fixed chairs and tables, in the summer months there is outside seating and tables available. There is a stair lift for access to the lower meeting room there is an induction loop easy read information available.
Toilets
On same level as entrance needs upgrade and refurbishment.
Staff
Often the greatest assets of a resource such as this are their staff, supported by volunteers the Door supports people in many different ways dependent on need and availability of provision. All and everyone are welcomed through the Open Door by the Open Door. The Door is supported by local businesses who recognise the contributions made the people of the community to it.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
The Morningside area like so many wee places in this City and in others, is a place within a place, it has a range of shops and services that are unique, if you are in the area or Edinburgh come inside the Open Door.
