Overview

The Shetland Stroke Support Group organise monthly meetings throughout the year. In June it was a boat trip to see Mousa & the Mousa broch. This is the best example of a Iron Age broch in Europe. The island itself is not accessible for people with poor mobility as it is very uneven ground. However this trip allows you to see the broch clearly with a lot of local information provided by the tour operators. They provide this tour approx. 8 or 9 times in the summer season or they can be chartered by arrangement. All trips are weather dependant. We were very lucky & had a lovely day weather wise. As said before the tour operators on the boat were very informative regarding local information with good humour added in 😂

Transport & Parking

3.5

There is level parking near the pier that you get to the boat. The pier is quite uneven & bumpy but can be accessed by wheelchair. The pier, we were informed, is listed in Scotland which means it is of historical or architectural interest & cannot be changed or updated.

Access

4.5

See the pier on the photos. Then the ferry is accessible for a manual wheelchair (not a power chair, I don’t think. This is with the help of the crew of the boat

Toilets

1.5

There are no toilets available on the boat but are nearby onshore.

Staff

4.5

The boat crew are very friendly & helpful. We spoke to them before the trip to inform them of my needs which made it easier on the day

Anything else you wish to tell us?

A very interesting, informative & enjoyable trip. We saw a few puffins in the water, no photos sorry, & there is the possibility of a variety of other birds & wildlife. There are often seals to be seen however there had been whales around this area the previous day so we didn’t see any. A trip we’ll worth doing if you are interested in nature, wildlife, history or general Shetland information.
