Fantastic hotel if you don't get lost in the carpet pile

Overview

I stayed at The Midland for one night for a work trip. I got special dispensation to take hubby with me to help out, as I generally find hotels too difficult on my own. We had a very pleasant stay and would definitely use The Midland again for personal trips.

Transport & Parking

We arrived by car at around 19:00 and had already checked parking on Google StreetView. There are several accessible bays right opposite the main entrance. Our only worry was whether they would all be full. We needn't have worried though. There were loads of spaces. There are good dropped kerbs to get to the main entrance of the hotel, though the textured paving is best described as savage!

Access

There are 2 sets of steps at the main entrance, with a ramp on each side. The gradient was fine for me but some people might need a hand. The second ramp is indoors and is carpeted. That makes going up harder and coming down, my chair pulled constantly to the right, due to the thick carpet pile. The lobby is huge and easy to move around in. They haven't got a lowered desk but I only had to give my name and they handed me the keycard, so it was fine. There are three lifts and they are plenty big enough. The corridors are also thick pile carpet. It's like wading through treacle! I know it helps with noise but it makes it such an effort to self-propel. The bedroom was the same. The bedroom was huge! It had a good wetroom with pretty much everything I needed. The only thing they could do is provide a few shelves or somewhere to put things. The shower was nice and hot but the pressure was weak. As with most hotels, nice big fluffy towels were provided and a good selection of soaps and shampoo. The bed was quite high, which is good for me. Overnight, the room had two temperatures - arctic or tropical. Without us locating the thermostat (it's behind the telly), it alternated between the two extremes so I kept waking, either freezing cold or dripping in sweat. The dining room was really well spaced out, and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was full English, continental and everything in between. It was all at a height I could reach but the staff were always around and checking whether I needed help. They were fine though when I said I didn't need help.

Toilets

4.5

The toilet in the wetroom was fine... had sturdy grab rail. The red cord was originally wrapped around the grab rail in the up position. Why do they do that?!! Fortunately I managed to disentangle it without summoning assistance. Toileting my assistance dog was the trickiest part of the trip. There is nowhere in the vicinity with grass, bark, pebble, etc. The only place we found was around the base of some of the trees. Some have metal grates round but a few are just mud with very small gravel. She was happy to go there.

Staff

The staff were on duty 24/7 and they couldn't have been more pleasant. They were very welcoming of my assistance dog but didn't attempt to distract her.

Accessible bedroom with pletny of space next to the bed. Wet room with shower, toilet, sink, grab rails and toiletries. The dining room with plenty of space and the self-serve area at the end.
