Overview

The King's Fund is a charity that works towards improving health care. Their offices contain a library which is open to the public. I visited to attend Bertie's Book Club, a group that meets monthly to discuss books with a medical theme. The evening I attended they were discussing The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon.

Transport & Parking

The King's Fund is tucked away down a side street off Cavendish Square, which is the square directly behind John Lewis on Oxford Street. The nearest tube is Oxford Circus, which is not step free and is often very busy. However, a number of buses stop very close by.

Access

The road which the King's Fund is located has quite narrow pavements. There are automatic entrance doors. On arrival there is a reception desk and the Book Club met in the library, which is on the ground floor and is step free. There was a good choice of free standing, firm but comfortable chairs and a sofa, all with arms.

Toilets

The accessible toilet is on the ground floor and close to the library where the group met. There were grab rails and an emergency cord. It was spacious and very clean. It was also rather posh with individual hand towels, which you usually see in luxury hotels.

Staff

The staff at reception directed me to the library. There are two woman who facilitate the book club meeting. They were welcoming, inclusive and very engaging. The group is informal members were able to participate if and when they wanted. The book under discussion was The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, with a central character who has Asperger's syndrome.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The book club is free to attend. The book group is a lot of fun to attend. It's interesting to find out what other people thought of the book. Given the book clubs medical theme it has widened the type of books I read as it has lead to me reading books I've never read before.
