Overview
Any visit to the Lake District is not complete unless you've been to the Grassmere gingerbread shop. The shop itself is very small and not particularly accessible because it's in a very old building which used to be the village school. The shop was originally established by Sarah Nelson in 1854.
Transport & Parking
Parking is limited in the village of Grassmere as it is quite small. However if you're going to the gingerbread shop it is possible to park in the garden centre car park across the road. As a wheelchair user it can be difficult to cross the road because it is very busy so please be careful if you decide to go this route. There is also the option of a public paying display car park which may turn out to be safer.
Access
Access to the shop itself is through a big green gate and down the small path into a very small doorway. As a wheelchair user I usually wait outside the shop as it is usually very busy with tourists coming on foot so it is generally quite a small space. I sit outside the shop and enjoy the smell of freshly made gingerbread.
Toilets
I don't know of any toilets in glassware apart from in the garden centre which is also a very small toilet.
Staff
Stuff in the gingerbread shop and generally very friendly and helpful. You can also order the gingerbread online if you would prefer it to be delivered to your home. They deliver worldwide.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
I feel quite Covid safe in this venue as it's possible to wait outside. As an alternative to waiting outside the shop but it can get busy you could go into the nearby churchyard and see the graves of William Wordsworth and his family. There is also a daffodil memorial garden nearby to commemorate the writing of his world-famous poem "daffodils' grassmere as a village is definitely worth a visit if you get chance.
