Overview
The Albert Halls is a welcoming medium sized venue in the centre of Stirling which hosts a large variety of events throughout the year. Music / Comedy/ Arts pretty much all tastes are catered for. As the name suggests this is a hall as opposed to a Theatre, so all ground floor seating is on the one level, not tiered with additional seating in the balcony above. Wheelchair spaces are always placed at the end of a row to the right hand side of the hall. Just say how far back you want to be from when booking your tickets. It’s not a huge venue so even if you’re near the back you’re never too far away from the action.
Transport & Parking
The Albert Halls are in a fairly central location and easy to get to. If coming from the train station and not in a power chair it would probably be best to avoid the route past The Golden Lion hotel and Corn Exchange Road as this is on quite a steep hill. Instead go to the end of the pedestrian zone and turn right up Albert Place it Is a slightly longer route but far more level. There are blue badge parking spaces within the small level car park in front of the hall. (Some of the parking area is cobbled surface) There are also on street parking options on Albert Place / Dumbarton Road itself and in the nearby Kings Park area but be warned there is quite a camber on some of the roads around the Kings Park area and also a local permit holder scheme in operation during the day until 5:30pm.
Access
The main entrance is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. Wheelchair access is via a door to the right hand side of the building adjacent to the blue badge parking spaces. The surface is good and the gradient gentle. Access is through an automatic door into a carpeted hallway which leads to the toilets and lift to the upper floor as well as the ground floor access to the main hall. The carpet is of the hard cord industrial type so not too bad for anyone using a manual chair. There are a couple of very slight gradients in the hallway. The main hall has a wooden floor with no gradients.
Toilets
There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor. It’s not very big and as I’m in a large power chair I can only go straight in and then I have to reverse out. There are all the usual grab rails etc but due to it also having a drop down baby changing bench there are extra buckets which hinder manoeuvrability within the cubical. Transfer options from a smaller manual chair would be either front on or to the left. I believe there is also a toilet on the upper floor but I have only ever been on the ground floor so can’t comment further.
Staff
I’ve been going to various events at the Albert Halls for a few years now and on every occasion the staff have never been anything other than first class. They will always make a point of making sure you get in and out the venue with the least hassle possible. On the rare occasion that an event does not have allocated seating you will still find that if you have booked a wheelchair ticket your space and that of whoever is accompanying you has still been specifically reserved for you.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Within the Albert Halls there is also a small Bistro which serves good food and is easily accessed via the same entrance. Tables are high enough to get access ok with my power chair. It’s not that big so best to pre book and check opening times.
