Overview
A family trip to Tantallon as had been a while, and wanted to check access for my dad who uses a mobility scooter. A lovely day trip, some improvements could help access if you don’t have support with you. The castle and grounds access are in keeping with what I would expect for a historic property
Transport & Parking
Drive. Two parking lots. One closest to visitor entrance has disabled spaces. The main car park is a walk along a smooth road / grass at sides. Imagine this would be a challenge if the disabled car park is full.
Access
2 x disabled parking spaces, ramp entrance to the visitor reception. I think there was no press button for the door entry and exit to the castle grounds so requires someone to hold the door. The corridor width was also small leading to the site. There is a side gate that’s locked and staff use only which perhaps could be opened on request but would still require access to visitors centre to ask. The historic site uses grass paths, cobbled areas and wooden bridges. We were visiting on a wild wet and windy day and navigating path was fine on foot but likely to be a challenge with mobility aids given patches of mud. To get to the castle you cross a cobble path and wood bridge. I would be confident bringing my dad here after a period of dry weather. It’s an exposed site so if you’re worried about wind etc it could be a challenge. Access in the historic site is of course limited for those with mobility issues due to age / ruins of castle. There are areas of low light that my daughter struggled with due to sensory changes. However just seeing the outside of this building is great, the coast setting beautiful and there are picnic benches for better weather. Limited seated on paths aside to rest at. Didn’t check for alternate formats.
Toilets
Disabled toilet was clean and cord access fine (with a notice to keep accessible). Grab rails present in the toilet we checked.
Staff
Welcoming, helpful and aware of euans guide/ importance of cord access in toilet
