Overview
We visited Talbot House as part of a WW1 history tour. Talbot House was set up as a place where soldiers could visit and have some home comforts, a warm welcome and hospitality. The gardens were meant to be a peaceful place where they could forget about the war. The same ethos remains to this day. There is also now a museum that explains the history of the place.
Transport & Parking
We travelled by motorhome and parked in the car park on Ouderdomseweg. It's about a 20 minute walk/wheel into town from there but the pavements were mostly good and it's really flat. Some of the crossing points are tricky though due to drainage gullies straight off the dropped kerbs.
Access
The museum is accessible and from there, you can get into and around the gardens, which are stunning. There is a large step to get from the garden into the house, where free tea and coffee is served. If you do get into the house, only the downstairs is accessible... but it is lovely. We chose to have our coffee at a table in the garden. It was really peaceful!
Toilets
By UK standards, the accessible toilet is small but at least they have one. It's behind the shop area. It was clean.
Staff
The staff could not have been more pleasant, friendly, helpful and welcoming. They were really keen to make us feel happy and relaxed. They welcomed my assistance dog and even the resident cat didn't complain!
