Overview
Beautiful scenery, heritage steam & diesel locomotives & lunch too! A great day out for a rail enthusiast but also great fun for all the family. The santa specials are a favourite with my wee cousins.
Transport & Parking
There is ample parking & 2 disabled spaces. just follow the signs for the steam railway from the roundabout as you come to Aviemore from the south. NB this is not the same as the car park for the mainline ScotRail, which is on the main street. From the car park, go over the level crossing & head up the platform to the ticket office.
Access
There is a lowered pavement & a small ramp up to the platform. 2 sets of wide doors lead through the ticket office & onto the platform. there is a shop but it might be tight for larger wheelchairs. it's best to book in advance if you need assistance as there is limited space for wheelchairs. Access onto the train is by a not too steep ramp and there is plenty space to turn inside.
Toilets
There is an accessible toilet halfway down the platform - go before you get on as I don't think there is one on the train.
Staff
Staff are very attentive and will probably spot you right away and try to get you onto the train before it gets too busy. In summer or on festive or special trains it can get quite crowded on the platform. Everyone is friendly - I know because I work there myself sometimes! The engine drivers can be persuaded to pose for selfies...
Anything else you wish to tell us?
The journey itself is really scenic with good views of the Cairngorms. My favourite is Boat of Garten station, where the train often stops to fill with water. The current end of line is Broomhill but in the future will go all the way to Grantown-on-Spey. I can't wait! Also, if you go on one of the dining car trips, you can eat some of the tasty food. I had some lovely soup and sandwiches. Nom nom!
