Advertises disabled parking spaces - marking them as such does not make them so!

Overview

So called disabled parking spaces are not suitable for wheelchair users - they are only slightly wider than the narrow standard parking bays. (This should be made clear in the advertising.) UK norm for parking spaces is 2.4 metres wide by 4.8 metres long. The space for manoeuvring (roadways) between bays is six metres. Not one of the disabled bays was this wide and each day the designated reserved parking bay was changed by staff. Even when assured that a parking area would be for our sole use for a few days of our stay, another member of staff decided that they would give that space to someone else, although we arrived back a the hotel before the other people arrived and so we were able to park there anyway, much to the annoyance of the female member of staff who approached us saying that it had been assigned for someone else. (We spoke to several people needing disabled parking spaces and they had the same problems). Whilst we appreciate that the hotel does not state it is wheelchair accessible throughout, only that there is disabled access, it would be a good idea to state door width measurements as Bathrooms are not accessible for permanent wheelchair users (the door was not wide enough for a standard chair and user to pass through and the shower was not accessible due to the gap between the glass screen and the wall not being wide enough). The door had to be removed for a permanent wheelchair user to be able to access the toilet and sink. It needs to be stated more obviously that dogs are permitted in the hotel, as this would have been an additional factor in our choice of hotel. Other than these points, the hotel staff were very friendly and helped where they could - even as far as removing the bathroom door so that the wheelchair user could access the toilet and sink. All of these points were brought up with management at the time and were addressed by them as best as they could.

Transport & Parking

1.5

3 x parking bays marked as disabled are barely wider than a normal parking bay. Even if you reserve a space for the duration of your stay, the staff move the reservation to suit themselves. The 'disabled' bays are not wide enough if you rely on a wheelchair and are only just wide enough if you are able to walk. For a driver who is a permanent wheelchair user (unable to weight bear) and a carer/passenger who does not drive, this was rather tricky!

Access

1.5

A very steep driveway up to the hotel that levels off more at the level of the main entrance. The very limited parking is on a slope. The main reception, bar and restaurant are all wheelchair accessible and have hard flooring but, as usual, tables are not high enough to get a wheelchair under. The accommodation across from the main reception / above the spa reception has a lift. The floors are all carpeted. The doors into each room seem to be the same width and wheelchair accessible, but the doors into the bathrooms are not wide enough for a standard wheelchair.

Toilets

0.5

Although the bathroom in the room is not accessible for a wheelchair, the toilet is 'high level' so wold be easier to use. The public accessible toilets are on the smaller side.

Staff

3.5

No eye contact from reception and/or management upon arrival. They were generally friendly and helpful throughout the hotel. Staff moved reserved parking signs to suit themselves so you could never guarantee being able to park, although we did manage to.
