Overview
We recently stopped off at the Spud Hut to find the old wooden shed and honesty box had been replaced with a brand new building, made of stone and in keeping with the area with level entry and double automatic doors. This meant that instead of one of us nipping out of the van to get our potatoes, I could get my brother who is a power chair user with PMLD out of the van for a look too. He was able to drive in by himself (something he’s not often able to do with narrower doorways due to his visual impairment and needing someone to open them). Inside was a large open floor space offering him lots of room to move around independently with lockers with glass windows down each side of the room with potatoes, boxes of fresh vegetables and eggs in. To buy what we wanted we chose items on the touchscreen then paid contactlessly by card (although it was possible to pay by cash too) and the locker doors opened for us to take our produce. The only thing I didn’t take much notice of was the height of the touchscreen, but if you have any problems at all I would suggest messaging their Facebook page, as we did because we didn’t fancy the veg from the first door that opened (only because we wouldn’t have chosen to buy that particular bit of broccoli as it was looking a bit yellow and everything else was looking so good) - they came and were extremely helpful and over-rode the system to open a different locker for us. They mentioned that they have a system in place to ensure that only doors that have vegetables that have been out of the ground for 48 hours should open. Something that might be helpful if you were unable to reach the next in line locker door to open. The veg was really fresh and full of flavour too. There were hand sanitisers on the wall outside and just inside the doors by the touch screen and because there wasn’t anyone else in there (even staff) it felt very Covid safe for my brother who has been shielding so very much enjoyed the opportunity to see somewhere new.
Transport & Parking
We drove there and were able to park right outside the building.
Access
Level entry through double automatic doors. Plenty of space inside to manoeuvre as there was nothing taking up any floor space. There wasn’t any seats that I noticed but it’s a small area and we were able to park close to the building. I didn’t notice any large text specifically but felt that the Covid signs and pictures of the veg on the touch screen were very clear.
Toilets
There weren’t any toilets at all.
Staff
Very helpful as described in the main review.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Plenty of hand sanitisers and signs promoting social distancing. And plenty of space.
