Overview

A very interesting day spent at Southwell Minster which is also a Cathedral. It is steeped in history and also has lovely gardens and an excellent café. Unfortunately the day we went it was pouring with rain so we didn't get to look round the grounds or take photos outside!

Transport & Parking

We drove and parked in the car park opposite the Minster which is well sign posted just off Church Street. There were large disabled parking spaces near the entrance of the car park. There is also a Radar key operated toilet in the car park within the toilet block.

Access

3.5

The entrance to the Minster front pathway has steps to the gate but if you go down a little way to the right and follow the signs for the Archbishops Palace there is a ramped pathway which leads round to the front doors of the Minster. It is a little steep at the beginning, there are handrails to help anyone walking. At the entrance of the Minister building, which is level access, there are staff who will open the doors for you. The Chapter house has stairs leading down to it but they will provide a lift for wheelchairs (I didn't use this). The rest was accessible in the wheelchair.

Toilets

4.5

There is an Accessible toilet located between the café and the shop. It has fixed grab rails at each side of the sink plus fixed grab rails to one side of the toilet and a pull down rail as well. Lever tap and easy to use soap dispenser and hand dryer.

Staff

All the staff/volunteers were very friendly and helpful. They are knowledgeable about the Minster history and gave us lots of interesting information. The staff in the café moved chairs for my wheelchair to be seated at the table and were very attentive.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

This is a great place to go if you like Cathedrals and history. The café has a good choice of menu and the food was very tasty. I would definitely visit again.

Photos

The High Altar The Tomb of George Ridding who was the first Bishop when the Minster became a Cathedral in 1884. The carved pulpit. Wild mushrooms in garlic butter in the café for lunch. Fish and chips!
