Overview
We had a day trip to Orkney and booked to see the Stone Age site, Skara Brae. There's a visitor centre and exhibition, gift shop, cafe an outdoor life size replica and the ruins/village itself. It's a beautiful location and well worth a visit. We booked a timeslot in advance which was cheaper and also meant guaranteed entrance since it was fully booked when we went. We got a disabled ticket with a free carer ticket.
Transport & Parking
Can't comment on public transport because we drove but there were disabled spaces and a helpful car park attendant telling us where to park. It was free because we had a pre booked entrance ticket. There was electric vehicle charging points
Access
I used my mobility scooter and had my assistance dog in training with me. The place isn't dog friendly so he was vested while we were in the visitors centre and the site itself but unvested in the outdoor picnic area. To get from the centre to the site, you have to walk across a bit of common ground/grassy space which meant we came across some dogs on walks there which we weren't expecting. The exhibition in the visitors centre was a bit tight to be able to view it from my scooter so I parked it and walked around it (it's not very big so only took 5-10 minutes). The replica of a house which you can go in was very dark but accessible on my scooter. The pathway down to the site was a grass path and fine on my scooter. You can borrow one or the centre's scooters if you want. The centre itself has level access or ramps. The site outside has a stone path but you can't access all of it using a scooter or wheelchair. You can, however, leave your scooter at the end of one of the paths and a steward will take it to the bottom of the next bit if you're able to walk the very short distance around the rest of the site. The stone path would be pretty slippy in the rain I think.
Toilets
There's an accessible toilet in the main centre with grab rails. It's not very big- big enough for me and my assistance dog but not big enough for my scooter.
Staff
Very friendly and helpful. Were very keen to make sure we were looked after
