Overview
I recently managed to get back into Shrewsbury town centre , I’ve been on weeks of bed rest. The council have recently spent many thousands on pavement works in the town. It appears that they didn’t think to consult anyone who is in a wheelchair and uses a ramp or tail lift(like I have) They have put bollards on the pavements; but at the end of parking bays, this makes it not possible for wheelchair users to exit their vehicles onto the pavement . (See photos) It’s very frustrating and I have tried to engage with the council,to no avail yet. The situation will not help draw disabled shoppers if spaces ;inc the designated disabled ones can not be used by all !
Transport & Parking
Some parking bays now have bollards preventing access in some areas and difficult in others, to people like myself from using them because you can’t get off onto the pavements!
Access
Generally in Shrewsbury;acces is ok, with the exception of some shops that don’t seem to want to obtain simple solutions like an access ramp to let wheelchair users in to their premises
Toilets
Shrewsbury is fortunate to have a great changing station room in the Darwin shopping centre and a privately managed one at ‘Nerdy coffee shop’ which is in Mardol(see my other reviews)
Staff
Generally most staff in shops in the town are helpful, but occasional you come up against the ‘not my problem’ people, when I ask why a shop owner hasn’t made their premises accessible to ALL
