Extensive woodland with wheelchair-friendly paths
Visit date:
This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Wheelchair
Overview
One den Haag's many green spaces, this extensive woodland area can be reached by bus from the city centre. Many of the paths (shared by cyclists and horse riders) are tarmac and very easy going for wheelchairs. Some of the smaller paths are of compacted gravel - navigable, but harder work if you are self-propelling.
Transport & Parking
Can't comment on the parking, and the tramline (number 1) which gets you to the entrances to the park is not yet wheelchair accessible, though they are working on it. Buses numbered 22 and 28 get you close to the park from the city centre, and are wheelchair accessible.
Access
Access is good, with no gates. The entrance on Schevenigse Weg has a map of the whole area. The main paths are surfaced with tarmac. There are slopes - the park is uphill from the city centre - but they are gentle and should be easily manageable to a wheelchair user who is self-propelling. The miniature city of Madurodam, which we didn't visit, is quite close to the northern edge of the park and their website says that the miniature city is wheelchair accessible.
Toilets
We saw none. Public loos are few and far between in the Netherlands, and there are even fewer accessible public loos. If you are visiting the park, the best bet is to use one of the few accessible loos in the city centre before catching a bus. There's a good one at Centraal Station.
Staff
We didn't encounter any. The park is well-maintained and litter-free.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
We enjoyed spring sunshine and the feeling of being out in the country, though we were only 2 kilometres from the city centre as the crow flies.
