Overview
www.saucymarys.com. One of only a few restaurants at Kyleakin, serving traditional fish and chips, and it is obviously a busy little restaurant. Is lies along the coastal path of the village, not many yards away from the picturesque harbour that over looks the ruined castle Moil PHOTO 1 (REVIEWED ON OUR KYLEAKIN PAGE) and actually an ideal spot to enjoy a hearty meal. The ruined castle was the home of Findanus Mackinnon and his wife Mary, built in the 15th century, and we suggest you read our review for “KYLEAKIN” for more information of the family and the castles history. It was there that his wife Mary gained her name and reputation. Just past the harbour, along the Main Street of the small village, you pass a couple of small shops and a large car park, and you reach “The Saucy Mary Hostel and restauarant” Over the years the word “saucy” has taken on new meanings, which originally meant someone who could be quite industrious, able to achieve things, but it now includes the thought of someone Lewd, or rude, and the legend of Saucy Mary does just that, as it suggests that after charging ships to cross the strait, to show her thanks to the sailors as she wished them a safe journey, she would flash a glimpse of her breasts as they sailed past. You can take that with a pinch of salt as you tuck into a plate of fish and chips at the restaurant. They serve a decent plate here, fresh fish and well cooked chips, but it can be busy, so better to book a table when you can from wherever you are staying. The restaurant area is nice and clean, well maintained, with simple plain wooden seating, ideal little place. The bar is well stocked, with good local ales and a fine choice of whiskeys.
Transport & Parking
You can park opposite the Saucy Mary, on what was a free car park at the end of 2023.
Access
The village is reasonable flat, and entrance into the restaurant was easy enough if you have a companion.
