Overview

This 2 bedroom cottage is situated in the courtyard directly opposite the castle. The courtyard is cobbled stone and there is a parking space at the door. Entrance is via a small, but slightly steep ramp to a double doorway. Rooms are a good size, particularly one of the bedrooms, and all have a red emergency chord in. There is also a visual alarm on the ceiling that light up in each room. The kitchen, although spacious, is not particularly made any more accessible than standard kitchens. The bathroom is large with a roll in shower and a bath.

Transport & Parking

3.5

Due to its rural location it is probably best for car users. Parking is in the courtyard directly outside the door of the cottage. As far as I'm aware there is no public transport that comes nearby, although, the nearest town which is a 15 minute car journey, Maybole, has a train station.

Access

4

Entrance is via a small, but slightly steep ramp to a double doorway. Once inside, there is level access throughout. Every room is a good size, particularly one of the bedrooms, and all have a red emergency chord in, although I found them all to be tied up out of the way. Maybe as this cottage is hired out to disabled and non-disabled alike. There is also visual alarms on the ceiling that light up in each room. The kitchen, although spacious, is not particularly made any more accessible than standard kitchens. The bathroom is large with a roll in shower and a bath.

Toilets

4

There is a good sized accessible toilet in the cottage. There are adequate accessible toilets throughout the grounds particularly at the visitors centre and the swan lake and in the castle itself.

Staff

5

Any staff member I had dealings with were extremely helpful and friendly.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

A separate review of the castle itself for visitors not staying overnight at the cottage is available. Originally This cottage would be for grooms, coachmen/stable boys, then was used to ensure disabled war veterans had a place to stay after WWII. I would suggest that if staying here, wheelchair users don't come on there own, due to the layout of the kitchen as some help maybe required. There are many miles of accessible country/Forrest walks through the beautiful grounds. Access is by Tarmac roads, some closed to traffic And dirt track paths that take you into the woods of the estate.
