Overview
A lovely relaxing, family friendly, dog friendly and wheelchair friendly route adjacent to the River Ouse. Safe, wide, flat pathway beginning at Lendall Bridge and commencing at Water End, near the Youth Hostel. Wheelchair users can access the route at The Museum Gardens or Marygate - which has excellent parking facilities, including a large selection of disabled spaces. There are picnic benches, seated benches, fields, tree's, banks, as well as concrete steps leading down to the river. There is an excellent array of boats to observe and there are often Ice Cream Vans dotted along the route during the summer months. The route goes on for miles further, but at this point is no longer wheelchair friendly. The remaining route includes cattle grids, brooks, cycle routes, hills and uphill walking.
Transport & Parking
A carpark on Marygate offers excellent disabled spaces which are large and close to the attrations. The carpark is pricey however.
Access
As the route is primarily a walking route there are not many places to stop and rest. They have picnic benches and seated benches but they are few and far between. The ground is predominently flat, but with the nature of 'walks' there may be uneven surfaces at times. The river often floods in the area so sometimes the ground may be wet with traces of mud; there are always plenty of signs if the river has flooded or they are expecting heavy rainfall etc.
Toilets
NA - Unfortunately there are no disabled toilets nearby and a local pub/resturant would need to be found. The closes of which would be in York Centre
Staff
There are no staff on this walk.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
This is always a pleasant walk for myself and my family regardless of the time of the year. My father-in-law is in a wheelchair and this route is suitable for his needs, but we always have to go into York centre afterwards for him to find a toilet before the journey home.
