Overview
The Rio is an independent, 2 screen cinema in Dalston, East London. It screens mainstream and art house films.
Transport & Parking
There are excellent public transport links. Dalston Kingsland is the nearest station but it is not step free. However, Dalston Junction is step free and is about a 5 minute walk away. Both stations are part of London Overground. There are also a number of buses that stop just outside or very close by.
Access
The cinema is housed in an old art deco style building. There is a step free entrance and on the ground floor is the foyer, café and main auditorium. The entrance door is power assisted but when I visited just before the performance it was open. Both screens have wheelchair spaces. I visited Screen 1 and I was permitted into the auditorium about 5 minutes before the public so I could get seated. The main auditorium gently slopes and the aisles are wide. There is also an upper balcony which I think is only accessible by stairs. Their Screen 2 is smaller and is located in their basement and is has step free access by lift. I didn't see this when I visited, but it is a smaller auditorium. They regularly screen films with subtitles. Guide dogs are welcome and their website states "We can provide drinking water for your guide dog and are happy to look after him/her during your screening. "
Toilets
On the ground floor their is an accessible toilet. It was spacious and clean. It has grab rails and an emergency cord (which did not reach to the ground). The accessible toilet door is clearly labelled. Their website says that they are planning to add another accessible toilet in the basement shortly.
Staff
Staff were so lovely and helpful. As I mentioned above I was admitted into the auditorium earlier so I could take my seat.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
The cinema had a lovely, friendly, welcoming atmosphere. With only 2 screens it's ideal for people want to avoid busy multiplexes. I went to attend a special event a screening of Grey Gardens which also included a pre-screening fashion show and Q and A. I really enjoyed my visit and I will certainly return.
