Overview
The two stone circle are either of the Ness of Brodgar where an archaeological dig takes place every July! ….unfortunately we were there in June, yet we were not disappointed, we visited the smaller of the two rings first, then drove the 3/4 miles to the Ring on Brodgar …don’t forget your camera! As they are special.
Transport & Parking
There are a couple of Disabled parking spots at both rings,
Access
The Stones of Stenness Circle, are in a field, so being in a wheelchair maybe a problem over the winter months. Barnhouse Settlement is on the far side of the stones in another field, about 200m across gray. There is guided free tour every day at 10am, Mon- Fri, that is full of information and open to any questions, walking at a comfortable speed for everyone in the group. The Ring of Brodgar stone circle is around 3/4 mile down the road with again a few disabled parking bays by the side of the road with main car park being a further 100 meter. The Ring can be seen from the road, but getting up to ring is roughly a 100 meters up a slope, the slope has a grass protection mesh making a bit easier to push a wheelchair up the slope, yet a bit bumpy! Once at the top the full glory of the ring can be observed, it is possible to walk around the ring but the ground is very uneven as it a natural mound. As with the Stenness circle there a daily guided talk everyday at 1pm, I didn’t get the opportunity to go on this tour and talk, yet I would be very surprised if it wasn’t as good as the talk given on the Stenness stones.
