Overview

If you want to obtain a visual Summary of the Dutch Culture and history, this is a great place to visit. The museum contains approximately 8,000 pieces of art on display in a space of over 9,500 square meters. You can easily spend a couple of days traveling from the 1100’s on floor 0 to modern day pieces on the third floor. This museum contains masterpieces from various famous artists…including Vermeer, Frans Hals, Van Gogh, and Rembrandt.

The Rijksmuseum is accessible by many forms of transportation. It takes an average of 11 minutes to arrive on a bicycle from the Amsterdam Central Station. It is also accessible by tram, bus, or taxi. If traveling by tram, look for the ITS symbol to ensure full accessibility. If arriving by car, there is a nice accessible parking garage located at the Museumplein, The company Accessible Travel Netherlands can arrange accessible taxis for you.

The Rijksmuseum is fully accessible for those in wheelchairs. Do keep in mind that electric scooters are not permitted inside. If you need a wheelchair or rollator, they are available at the museum. You can call in advance or ask a staff member at the information desk. Persons who are unable to go through the museum on their own can bring one companion to accompany them for free. Companion passes are available at register 1. Accessible Toilets are available on level 0, near the ticket counter. To avoid waiting in long ticket lines, it is best to purchase an e-ticket in advance. Also, the Garderobe is available to hold hang your coat, but this can sometimes have long lines. To save time, you can use the available lockers instead free of charge. As one of the main attractions in Amsterdam, it can get very crowded. For the best mobility, it is best to visit early in the day Monday through Thursday. The busiest hours are between 11 and 2.
