Overview

Preston Hall is one of Stockton's well known cultural attractions, bustling with visitors all year round. Within the hall are its galleries, a much-loved Victorian street comprising of shops and activities, gardens and grounds with river walks, parkland and children's play areas. The hall hosts numerous events throughout the year including feasts, art and music events, talks and children's activities such as broomstick training and magic school! There is even the opportunity to have your own Victorian style photograph taken. The hall was built by David Burton Fowler in 1825 and was first opened as a museum to the public in 1953. Since then, it has undergone restorations in recent years to make the hall better than ever. Accessibility is very good around the hall and gardens with guide dogs welcome. The hall also has a hearing loop, accessible toilets, lifts, wheelchair hire and disabled parking bays. The majority of paths are evenly surfaced, however there are some areas of the paths around the grounds that can be uneven due to its nature. Payment is required on entry to the museum but is valid for a full year and there are no limits to how often you go. There is free entry for carers with relevant proof of entitlement. However, the hall is set in parkland which is accessible and free to explore.

Transport & Parking

Parking is free and is situated within the grounds. There are designated parking bays and a large overflow car park, part of which is on grass. Designated disabled parking can be found within the main car park. If travelling by train, Eaglescliffe railway station is a 10/15-minute walk away from the hall. There is also a bus route which stops next the hall.

Access

The hall has level access and throughout the museum there are wide walkways and lifts to access all floors. The Victorian street can be accessed via numerous entrances which enables easy access. There and seats and benches for a place to rest. There are also disabled toilets in the main hall and also outside next to the cafe. Hearing loops are also available.

Toilets

The accessible toilet in the main building is situated next to the stairs leading to the first floor. The toilet in the grounds can be found next to 'cafe tees'.

Staff

The staff and volunteers were very helpful and appeared to take pride and be enthusiastic about their work. They were informative and friendly.

Preston Park offers many things to explore whilst on your visit. There is the hall, grounds, parkland, play areas and skate park meaning there is something for everyone of all ages. Also on the grounds is Butterfly world, which can be explored for a small fee.
