Overview
Poppy Rose is a beautiful vintage style cafe. The owner, who runs it, has done her best to make this old building accessibility-friendly. She does sell pretty things in the upstairs rooms, which sadly I can no longer manage, but she is willing to bring items down to show you if you know what you are looking for. The concept of the tea room is very special. It is furnished with vintage furniture done up by Poppy, the tables have embroidered linen cloths and all the china is pretty vintage florals. There is an extensive loose leaf tea menu and the coffee is excellent too, made in a cafetiere. The sandwiches are freshly made to order and you can choose which type of bread you would like. Cakes likewise are freshly baked and very tasty. There is never any rush to leave and the whole experience of eating there is cosy and relaxing, and elegant, but never intimidating. Poppy herself has helped my husband on exit, because I am always a bit nervous going down the steps. Visiting Poppy Rose is like going back in time to the Edwardian period, and being treated like a VIP. It's very feminine but my husband likes it too. Highly recommended if you can manage it.
Transport & Parking
There is no car park, but if you have a blue badge you can park right outside. If not there is free parking further back, on Witton Street.
Access
The building is an old one with a steep step. However, the owner has put up a grab bar, and when the cafe is open, she puts out an extra step. Not suitable for wheelchair users but fine for ambulant disabled. There are two rooms for eating; the one on a slightly higher level has a ramp with handrail. It is table service so there is no need to carry trays etc, and the service is excellent.
Toilets
The toilet is not suitable for wheelchair users because it is too small, but there is level access and it is easy to manage on a stick. No space for a carer, but everything is within reach.
Staff
Poppy Rose, who owns the business, is a wonderful warm and friendly host, and she has trained the rest of her staff to be the same way. One always feels special eating here.
