Overview

The piece was interactive, and this was done in the fairest way possible. When school trips attend, the teachers are offered to pick who can contribute, and every way of communicating was facilitated! My personal favorite moment was when an actor with synesthesia described the colour of everyone's voices! Using BSL integrated into the choreography, projection to show new words as well as saying them aloud, and using colour to help explain scientific theories, this show teaches and entertains in a way that is accessible to all! The script was educational, lighthearted, and had DDN considerations at its forefront, while the direction was simple to follow without being under-stimulating. My only critique is that the music wasn't particularly memorable, and sometimes sections of the show felt slightly disjointed, with transitions needing more intention to flow.

Transport & Parking

3.5

There are a few parking options nearby, and lots of bus options too. This is particularly helpful given that the nearest tube stations (a 10min walk away) does not offer level access of any kind. The terrain outside and around the theatre is all flat and wide enough pavements for anyone using mobility aids to get around comfortably.

Access

The Polka theatre are incredibly committed to accessibility in all senses of the word. More information about this can be found on their website: https://polkatheatre.com/access-and-support/ (and the fact they have SUCH an accessible page designated to this speaks very positive volumes). Some of the highlights of my trip included the representation of all types of differences and disabilities in both the cast and front of house staff. Intersectionalities were made clear, and they made everyone's needs a specific part of the show, instead of just mentioning it once or twice, or keeping silent about it altogether. The message of equity and diversity was really strong; so great for both young people and the adults accompanying them! Speaking of EDI, the outdoor play area has now reopened which is lovely but unfortunately not as adaptive as it could be - meaning that those with certain physical limitations may be more suited to the inside spaces (which are also lovely, and very health & safety friendly thanks to being designed for children). This is helpful for disabled people of any age who struggle with sudden movements, are prone to injury, or don't have great spacial awareness/ proprioception. A social story is available for all shows, in both audio and large print (and the signage around the venue is this versatile, too), and there are assisted performances available for all productions. The lighting and sound was designed to fit with the show rather than simply compliment it, and acted as a way to follow along with what are complex topics for the target age group (6-12). On that note, this is not an exclusive offer, and the Polka theatre are one of the least ageist venues I know - with other similar theatres now only allowing adults with children to attend (sooo inconsiderate for those with PMLD who would enjoy it just as much!)

Toilets

The accessible bathrooms had a red cord hanging to the floor, with plenty of space and very clean. There were no adult changing places available, and the door was quite heavy to open, but there are grab rails and a lower sink (not adjustable).

Had clearly undergone disability equality training, and were happy to help when I needed to use the lift!
