Overview
Pizza Express is a large chain of restaurants. Many of the restaurants I've visited have very good disabled access, however on their website they do not claim that their King's Road, Chelsea branch is disabled accessible.
Transport & Parking
This branch of Pizza Express is on King's Road in Chelsea. The nearest tube station is Sloane Square, which on the accessibility tube map is marked with red ! saying that escalator access is only available between street and platform for those exiting the station. I travelled there by bus and there are several buses that stop very close by.
Access
The restaurant is housed in a historic property. Only the tables in the outside courtyard is accessible for people with wheelchairs. There are 4 - 5 steps to the entrance. There is a handrail. Once inside the tables are pretty close together but the tables and chairs are movable.
Toilets
When I asked were the toilets were a member of staff took me to a toilet which was on the same level as the restaurant. The toilet was also had baby changing facilities. The space is too small to accommodate a wheelchair. There was an emergency cord which didn't reach to the floor and a grab rail on the inside of the door which was unreachable when you were sat on the toilet. There was no grab rails near the toilet or sink area. didn't see the other toilets but I saw a staircase and I assumed they were either up or down a flight of stairs.
Staff
The staff were excellent. When I arrived they checked that the table was suitable for me. When I asked for a toilet they took me to the ones on the same level as the restaurant. When I came out I spoke to the nearest member of staff who immediately went to get the manager (sorry I didn't get his name) he was very apologetic about the lack of disabled access provision. He explained that the toilet I used had been installed about a year ago before that they had no toilet on the same floor as the restaurant. I explained about the lack of grab rails and he agreed to raise it with the company.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
The food was delicious. made the assumption based on visits to other Pizza Express restaurants that this branch would have accessible facilities. Overall I find Pizza Express try to be disabled friendly but if you are wanting to go to a particular restaurant I would suggest checking website and if there is no disabled access listed phoning ahead first. I'd like to thank the staff for being so helpful.
