Overview
We had a lovely visit here on our way to Anglesey. The weather was a bit mixed but there is a good mixture of indoor and outdoor things to do. The main attraction is the castle, which has wheelchair access to the ground floor. There is also a little railway museum, cafes and a walk (fairly hilly) to the walled garden, which is lovely but not that accessible.
Transport & Parking
I rang in advance to ask about parking because we were travelling by motorhome so I wasn't sure if we could fit in the disabled parking area. They said to ask at the welcome office in the main car park and if they still had room, we could park at the top, near the castle. We did that. The welcome staff were great and directed us to the top car parking area, where there was plenty of space. From the disabled car park, it's fairly flat and not far to the castle. If you park at the bottom, it's a long steep climb up.
Access
The castle was fantastic! The ground floor route is mostly wide and easy to get round. I managed in my mountain trike, which is bigger than a normal chair. You go round at your own pace, so plenty of time to read info signs and have a look at interesting parts. The railway museum was a little tight in places for me, with the trike, but I managed to get round okay. I love trains, so it was worth a little jiggling. The cafe in the stable yard outside the museum was lovely too but in spite of being asked not to fill the cup to the top (I have a tremor) they filled it full and it was scalding hot and the cups aren't very heatproof. I think I'd get a cold drink next time. The gardens were a short walk away, which was on a mixture of surfaces and quite hilly. I was a bit disappointed that when we got there, only the top level was accessible. The grounds are steep and to get anywhere, there's steps. The walk back through woodland was lovely though.
Toilets
There is an accessible toilet but on this occasion, with having the trike, I chose to use our own in the motorhome, so I didn't see what they were like.
Staff
With the exception of ignoring the coffee instruction, all staff were excellent! They were friendly and helpful, only petted my assistance dog with permission, answered questions and provided help as requested... and were generally very pleasant.
