Good accessible cinema in South London

Overview

The step free, 6 screen multiplex cinema is situated in Peckham, South London. It shows mainstream, independent, foreign language, and art house films. It currently (November 2023) offers all tickets at £5.99, every day and all day. So there is no child or concessionary rates. They accept the UKCA carers card. For London this is excellent value if comparing it going to the cinema in the West End which will be twice the price or more. They offer subtitled films and autism friendly screenings.

Transport & Parking

The cinema is in the main shopping street in Peckham and several buses stop close by. Travelling southbound the nearest stop is The Aylesham Centre Stop N. Travelling Northbound the nearest stop is Peckham Rye Station Stop U. From the bus it is a couple of minutes walk. The nearest railway station Peckham Rye is a 2-3 minute walk away from the cinema. I travelled by bus so can't comment but the National Rail website says no platforms have step free access. Exiting from the station into Rye Lane. Turn left, walk to McDonalds, where there is a pelican crossing. Cross the road and turn left. The almost immediately right is a small square and the Peckhamplex is at the far side.

Access

The cinema entrance is level with the pavement and has manual entrance doors, which were closed when we visited in November. There is a large foyer with sofa seats down one side, there is a long counter which is at standing height where tickets and refreshments can be purchased. If you have have booked your tickets on line you will need to collect your tickets. There is a gentle upward slope with handrails on the wall side leading to the screens. You have to have your ticket ripped by a member of staff. Once through there is no seating area, but the toilets are there. Our film was on screen 6 which was step free. There is a gentle slope down, with no handrail. The seats are comfortable but not luxurious. There was quite a large screen.

Toilets

The accessible toilet is located after the ticket checking area. It is straight in front of you, next to screen 6 as you pass the ticket checking desk. There is a manual door. It uses a RADAR key. There is a board on the door which said engaged when I visited. It is worth knocking to double check if anyone is in it, as it was showing engaged when it was empty. The accessible toilet has a short door with corridor that opens out into a more spacious area, see photos. There are grab rails. There was a white cord hanging in mid-air by the toilet, I do not know if this is meant to be an emergency red cord. The toilet was clean and tidy.

Staff

Overall staff were very helpful and friendly. When we arrived it was our first time there and we went to the desk in the foyer to collect our tickets. We were booked to see Anatomy of a Fall. However, my friend wanted to check if it had subtitles as she has a visual impairment and would find it difficult. The staff were very helpful and checked. They came back to say that the film did not have subtitles. However, the film is in English and French, and there are a lot of subtitles, although the trailer for the film is in English. My friend was very disappointed as she wasn't able to enjoy the film as she could not see the subtitles. She spoke with staff afterwards and they told her it is advertised as having subtitles. I think it was a genuine mistake on the part of the cinema staff, but when she raised it, she was told to write into the manager, and I felt her access needs could have been better supported by the cinema staff, by taking her details passing them on to the manager, and generally being a bit more proactive. That is why I marked it down as 4 stars, not 5.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

This is a great choice cinema if you are looking for an accessible, cheap multiplex cinema in South London. It offers excellent values and a wide choice of films. There are excellent bus connections in the area. It is a short bus journey from Elephant and Castle. So it is quite easy to travel to from other parts of London. It's in a busy high street with a range of shops and cafes, including the Aylesham Shopping Centre and Khan's Bargains, which my friend described as an emporium, as it sells food and household basics. Really enjoyed our cinema trip, excellent value for money, and great choice of films to watch. Will definitely be back soon.
