Overview

I visited the station specifically for this review. The station is functional but not suitable for those who may struggle with steps or wheelchair users who are unable to walk. The station is 160 metres from St Mirren FC’s home turf, the SMISA Stadium, this is its most notable feature. The proximity of the two has seen a campaign to rename the station St James rather than St Mirren gather steam. If pressure from the public can result in a boat being named Boaty McBoatface, this campaign stands a chance.

Transport & Parking

There is no local parking at the station. There are single yellows on the streets nearby but street signs warn against parking on match days.

Access

The unstaffed station has no step-free access, making it unsuitable for those who have difficulty with stairs. There are 13 steps up to the station before an incline takes you to Platform 2. To cross to Platform 1, you have to use the walkway, which has 20 steps up and 20 steps down on the other end. There is a ticket machine, but only on Platform 1. The signs on Platform 2 state there’s no ticket machine at this station - which leads me to assume that those boarding from Platform 2 can purchase a ticket on the train. There’s no ramp access to the train, Scotrail suggests that you call their accessibility line at least 2 hours before travel should you need assistance. There is an induction loop. Each platform has a bench, in addition, Platform 2 has 3 sheltered seats, and Platform 1 has 6 sheltered seats.
