Overview
Riding on a steam train is a special and unforgettable experience. The train is accessed via a ramp in to the guard's van. There are windows in the gusrds van and a small bench seat so that if your wheelchair is too large to fit through the carriage doorway inbto the disabled space on the carriage, you can travel with two companions in the guard's van. Our wheelchair user in his pwerchair was just able to get through into the carriage. There is a Carer's ticket scheme so that a wheelchair user's companion goes free. The staff are mostly volunteers and we were made to feel very welcome. I understand that a Lottery grant will enable them not only to carry out repairs to the line, but also some is earmarked for improvements to the accessibility of the railway. Have a look at their website for more information https://www.nymr.co.uk/ or phone them in advance (which is what we did).
Transport & Parking
We travelled from Whitby to Pickering and back so I can only comment about Whitby. There is a station car park but it is expensive and Blue Badge holders still have to pay. We parked in the nearby Co-op car park - maximum stay 4 hours, not free for Blue Badge holders but designated spaces plus one hour free with the Blue badge which just about gives you enough time for the whole return journey.
Access
Level access on to the platform - concrete ramp from the pavement to the entrance - then a ramp into the guard's van and level access on the train.
Toilets
I didn't see an accessible loo onboard. Just the normal train toilets.
Staff
Warm and welcoming. Couldn't have been better.
