Overview

An excellent day travelling behind a steam engine from Whitby to Pickering with 3 hours to explore the town. Helpful friendly staff helped me enjoy the journey in 1950's rolling stock.

Transport & Parking

Huge carpark at Pickering less than 200 metres from the station with drop off possible. Whitby station car parking is limited but plenty available on the harbouring. Drop off possible but the ramp to the platforms may take some finding. From the carparks.

Access

Getting on board is done through an old guards van. I watched the elderly volunteer staff closely with a 21 century ramp on a 20 century carriage but it worked and I felt safe. Despite being told in advance that I would remain in the guards van (with small windows) my powered wheelchair could enter a normal carriage and enjoy the scenery through far larger windows.

Toilets

Pickering station is very good for access with a spacious disabled toilet on the platform. Whitby lacks a disabled toilet but there is one over the road in station square. Radar keys needed for both. As yet Whitby has no Changing Places Toilet near the station but one may appear in 2022. I am not aware of one in Pickering.

Staff

Friendly helpful and kind to me travelling alone with dysarthric speech.
