Overview
New Pudsey train station is a fairly small station however I was impressed with the facilities it had to enable people with a disability to use the station with ease and enjoyment whilst they are travelling.
Transport & Parking
In the train station car park there are several disabled parking spots available; these are located at the front of the car park close to the ticket office and entrance to the platforms again making access to the station easier and more convenient. If you were not driving to the station there is a drop off rank at the front where taxis can pull up near to the ticket office.
Access
The entrance of the train station has a ramp leading up to the automatic doors to enter the ticket office, this would make access to gain tickets hassle free as there is no steps to worry about. However there is no hand rail available, having this facility would be helpful. Both automatic doors are wide enough to allow a wheelchair to pass through. Once you get out of the ticket office, there are slopes at both sides to get down to the platforms. The slopes are wide and have a rail at each side however with the slope, wheelchair users may need assistance.
Toilets
Not having an accessible disabled toilet is a downfall to the station, the door to the standard toilets may be wide enough to allow a wheelchair to access however, as the toilet is not designed for a wheelchair the limited space and obstacles inside the toilets could prevent a person with a disability being able to go to the loo. In the standard toilet there is also not enough room for carers to go into the toilet with another person to assist them.
Staff
The staff at the station are always pleasant and helpful so they would be more than willing to offer anyone a helping hand if it was required.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Although the station does not have an adjustable ticket counter, it was a good height for both people in a wheelchair and people without. The ticket office also has an induction loop however there are no wheelchairs available so people have to supply their own equipment. Furthermore, there is ramp available for train access.
