Overview

The tramper (mobility scooter) was only able to be booked on a Tuesday afternoon, from 13:30. Not sure why... Hordes of people, very pleased to have booked ahead. Last disabled parking space saved for us as we had pre-booked so sailed past long queue of hot tourists in cars. The tramper was ready to go and I could have it over lunchtime, not just to get up and down the steep river valley. Good path, other visitors quick to leap out of my way. I felt a bit stuck on a track but there were only 3 able bodied paths and the single tramper-appropriate one was well designed and effective.

Drove to the door. Bypassed long queue of other car drivers by waving blue badge. One disabled parking space had been saved for the person who had booked the tramper for that afternoon- me. Had I not booked, there would have been no parking. Steepish slope from car to visitor hut. Staff very friendly and welcoming.

Large tramper, small enclosed picnic area. I didn't feel able to drive it into the picnic area but I am only part time wheelchair user, can manage short distances with a stick. Minimal seating, small enclosed tarmac space, long line of people standing queueing for food. (August, lunchtime.) No idea how I would have managed on my own, as it was my lovely husband stood and queued in the heat for 25 mins+ on my behalf and chose something for me to eat. Glendurgan is a long, thin valley garden. Visitors are funnelled down a narrow space to an attractive harbour, where you can buy National Trust ice cream and play on the beach (we went at high tide so no beach, just a crush of hot tourists) before going back up the hill again. The path available for the tramper was well maintained and the National Trust have done a lot to make everything as accessible as possible for the mobility-impared.

It was hot and busy, with the National Trust low on volunteers and staff. None the less, everyone was very friendly and happy to see us, I felt very welcomed.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Definitely visit, but pre-book the tramper (and maybe ask why it is only available on a Tuesday afternoon?). It would be a better visit if you timed the tides to get onto the beach at the bottom of the valley, but then again I don't think the tramper was meant to go onto the beach... And avoid peak season when possible!
