Overview

I booked a power boating experience for myself and my family in May and another in June 2024. The activity duration was good and we felt relaxed about the pace, from putting the borrowed life jackets/ clothing on, to the boat trip itself. We hope the Good Day Promise project will continue to receive funding as it has been a wonderful opportunity for our family to get out on the water and enjoy a shared activity. Our group's age range spanned 21 to 88. Everybody enjoyed it and spoke about it in the following weeks. People in the group who usually get motion sick didn't have any problems. The first trip was cold and rainy and the second was warm and bright- enjoyable in all weather.

Transport & Parking

Mylor Yacht Harbour was well signposted and a short drive from the direction of Penryn/ Falmouth. Parking onsite was free when displaying a poster from Mylor Sailing School which we picked up on arrival and returned at the end of the visit. Bus links particularly for a Sunday were not as useful so some of us used a taxi instead.

Access

5

They accommodated our access needs through lending us a spare wheelchair to get up and down the slipway, and using a boat which could open fully at the front, meaning we did not have to climb at any point- we simply walked/ rolled on board. Another family member was able to remain in their own wheelchair while on board while the rest of us used sturdy fold out chairs which were provided. They listened to our requests for a smooth ride or a place we wanted to see and designed routes which accommodated our wants and needs. Tip- check capacity when booking- we were able to accommodate an extra person by one of our party transferring from a wheelchair to a fold out chair during the boat trip.

Toilets

The public toilets were a couple of minute's walk from the main site and there are some cafes/ restaurants/ pubs there as well. We did not use accessible toilets during our visits so cannot comment on them.

Staff

Tracey was really quick to respond to my enquiries. The instructors, Katy, Nuala and Joe made us feel welcome and engaged with humour and insight when we asked questions about sailing and the area during our excursions. They were happy to be in photos and take photos for our group. The instructors listened to us and checked if we were happy with or wanted to vary the speed. They didn't pry about our reason for being eligible for the Good Day Promise Project and I appreciated not having to go into details at what is an emotional time. We were able to book a second trip as easily as the first.
