Overview
To start with a pro, the calmac staff were very helpful and did what they could to make the journey easier for me. Parking onboard was arranged so that we were near the lift for wheelchair access. The lift was small but just big enough for a powerchair. Unfortunately the lift only goes up to Deck 4, which is indoor only. Access to Decks 5 and 6 was via steep stairs, so I couldn't go outside, which I was very disappointed about. Deck 5 has a coffee shop, a small windowless pet area with a bench seat and a water bowl for the dogs, the information desk, toilets and a restaurant. There was a reasonably spacious disabled toilet, but it could do with updating. I had my support dog with me, which was the next problem, as I had no wish to spend 5 hours of a ferry trip (in beautiful weather) in a tiny windowless area, and miss out on the opportunity to see the amazing wildlife. Fortunately, the staff allowed me to sit at one of two tables designed for wheelchair access in the restaurant, where I could see out of the window. Usually this is service dogs only, and as an emotional support dog, mine does not really qualify. It was far from ideal, but much better than the alternative! I was able to see the dolphins leaping and playing in the water.
