Overview
On the Royal Mile, this 'tardis' of a museum features toys and memorabilia which will be recognised by people of various generations. You hear numerous discussions by visitors starting with 'I had one of those!!' Amongst it are descriptions of changes within society, particularly around education, healthcare and play. This is illustrated by the types of toys, but also through clothing, film clips etc.
Transport & Parking
In the city centre, this is well served by public transport. The nearest train station is Waverley, there are also buses. There is no parking immediately at this venue, and it is a busy tourist area. Disabled parking is available on the surrounding streets.
Access
There are lots of great features in this museum. There are lots of interactive parts relating to the exhibitions. Information is given in different ways, including through film clips. The museum is over several levels which can be accessed both by stairs and a lift. Each floor is then flat to get around. However, entrance (& exit) is through the shop, which can be quite busy. The front doorway is flat, but it could be difficult to open the door as it isn't automatic/ doesn't have a button or bell. This is an ideal family day out, and far from being a 'traditional' museum, it does understandably tend to have lots of excited children running around exploring it. I think it's fantastic to see children so engaged. Others though, may find this a little chaotic, so if you prefer a quieter visit, perhaps go during school hours and avoid school holidays.
Toilets
The toilet I saw was very spacious and certainly room for a wheelchair and carer, if required. I was interested to see the emergency pull cord appeared to be missing. There wasn't one there, but it looked like the fitting for one was on the ceiling. I'm not sure if it had somehow been accidentally pulled out? There was a button alarm on the wall.
Staff
Staff were friendly when you spoke to them, and I saw some interacting well with children visiting. They did seem very busy though, and having a few more staff at peak times might be good.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Free entry to this museum! Good for people of all ages. Children can play and explore. Adults can reminisce!
