Overview

The only museum in Greece dedicated to Asian art and with great access. The museum has about 15,000 objects which are beautifully displayed. There is a Chinese wing, where the first four rooms are laid out chronologically and then remainder in themes, such as painting and porcelains. The Japanese collection includes Samurai objects, paintings, ceramics. The South East Asia collection includes India, Gandhara, Siam, Cambodia, Nepal and Tibet. The collection is housed in the Palace of St Michael and St George, a beautiful neoclassical building which is impressively decorated.

Transport & Parking

Corfu Town is a short 5 – 10 minutes’ drive by taxi from Corfu Airport. There are buses that serve the town centre and taxis are plentiful and quite reasonably priced.

Access

There is step free access into the museum but it is not obvious, as at first glance it looks like you have to go up steps to reach the portico and entrance. If you are facing the building, make for the left, to the end of the building. Here there is an archway with a road going through it. Go through the archway and then turn to face the building, and you will find a step free entrance onto the portico. There are automatic doors into the museum. At the entrance is a ticket desk. There is a ramp on the right hand side to get you up to main part of the gallery. There are lifts to all floors but you have to be accompanied by a member of staff when you use them. There are staff on all floors of the museum. The galleries are well laid out so it is not crowded. There is bench or chair seating in most of the rooms. Many of the glass cases are quite low down but tall and objects are described in Greek and English. The museum is beautifully laid out and the objects are very impressive. I noticed a couple of the cabinets had braille caption on it, sorry the photo I took of this was all blurry, so I've not posted it.

Toilets

5

There is an accessible toilet, which was spacious, clean and with grab rails. the flush for the toilet is on the right grab rail. Apart from at Corfu Airport this was the only accessible toilet I saw during my week's holiday.

Staff

Staff were very helpful. They informed me about the lift and accessible toilet. Staff responded quickly when I asked to use the lift, which they accompanied me on.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The museum has an admission cost 6 euros (April 2019) given the quality of the exhibition I think this was extremely good value for money. It's also housed in a beautiful building and is very accessible. Highly recommend if you like museums and it was easy to spend 1 - 2 hours, there depending on your interest.
