Overview

We decided to take our own car from England to Ireland this summer via Holyhead in Wales. Booking for the Holyhead to Dublin ferry route was straightforward online with Stena Line, and they actively encourage you to declare you're a wheelchair user as part of the process (unlike a lot of hotels I book where you can't see online which rooms are the accessible ones). There seems to be a legal limit on how many wheelchair users they can take on board, presumably for evacuation purposes, so do get in there early with your booking. I would also highly recommend coughing up the extra £25 for an accessible cabin, as it is so pleasant to have a lie-down during the 3 1/4 hour crossing and there is the bonus of a private accessible toilet. The system where they park you by the lift on the car deck works well too, and the only thing about the crossing that is slightly disappointing is that it's difficult for wheelchair users to get out onto the open deck for some sea air because of big lips on the external door thresholds. I should also commend Holyhead port for having nice big clean accessible portaloos you can use while waiting for your ferry.
