Overview

The main Northernly town in the Cotswolds, with typical honey coloured stone historical buildings, a few hotels along a wide ancient street, and worthy of a Quick Look as you drive through. It’s not a favourite, with very little to see and do, but an ideal coffee break to start a days trip in the Cotswolds. It is a market town, Moreton coming from an old English word meaning “farmstead on the moor” and “in Marsh” simply means a marsh used by birds. There are signs that show Morton to be of the Iron Age, and then Roman coins have been discovered. During this period the best preserved Roman route was laid, “The Fosse Way” Its first mention in history was around 577AD as a Saxon settlement, then after the Norman conquest, the town became part of the land owned by Westminster Abbey. Then during 1222, and later 1246 it quickly developed into a market town, and thanks to the wool trade, it thrived, and the town was built with a long and wide High Street. It became a part of the London to Worcester coach route, with stopping places for the stagecoaches, which made use of the Redesdale Arms, (We offer a review for this) and the White Hart Royal. Morton is not really a tourist town, but it does have a few antique shops, bars, hotels and restaurants, all along the main High Street. Generally we have found parking to be a bit of a problem, as the town is used by locals at the supermarkets here, and tourists pop in to see the town, on their way to Batsford Arboretum, to to Sezincote house and gardens.

Transport & Parking

3

Parking can be a problem, the car parks are along High Street, which in itself causes a long queue of cars. Disabled spaces seem to be non existent, and the private hotel car parks are hard to find to get into them.

Access

The streets are old, and very uneven, most buildings or shops seem to have steps, so not really an easy town for disabled.
