Overview
Mildred's is a small chain of vegetarian and vegan restaurants. The first restaurant was opened in Soho in the 1980s and currently they also have branches in Camden, King's Cross and Dalston. They serve an international menu. This review is for their King's Cross branch. The restaurant ticked all the boxes great food, excellent accessibility and nice, relaxed atmosphere. This was the first restaurant I had visited since coming out of shielding and although I feel anxious about eating out/ going out still, this was a good choice.
Transport & Parking
Mildred's King's Cross is about a 5 minute walk from King's Cross Station. King's Cross tube station is step free. The restaurant is on Pentonville Road and lots of buses pass the restaurant. As of 2020 the bus numbers are 30, 73, 205, 214 and 476.
Access
Mildred's is located on the ground floor of a modern building and is entirely step free. There is a small al fesco dining area outside with free standing tables and chairs. The outside area is roofed over, see photo. The entrance has double manual doors, which were open when we arrived. The restaurant is spacious and due to social distancing measures there is plenty of space between tables, see photo. There are free standing tables and chairs without arms, as well as a couple of sofas.
Toilets
There is an accessible toilet which is spacious, has grab rails and an emergency cord which reached to the ground. It was clean and tidy. When I walked in it smelt like it had recently been cleaned. A Changing Places toilet is available in King's Cross Railway Station.
Staff
Staff were welcoming and friendly. Service was very good. Food was cooked fresh to order but there was not a long wait.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
The restaurant has a modern, bright interior and decor. There's a very nice range of food, see photo of menu, with a choice of starters, mains, sides, desserts and hot and cold drinks. Dishes are coded to clearly indicate ingredients. Dishes are well presented and portions are generous. Food was really delicious and highly recommend the dumpling starter (I order it every time I visit) and caramel cheesecake. Regarding covid-19 precautions: We went on a Friday at 1.30pm and there were just a few other diners. It was busy enough to have atmosphere but quiet enough to feel safe. We pre-booked a table online and when we arrived our temperature was taken using a contact free thermometer. Social disatance is encourages with foot prints on the floor at the entrance to assist with distancing. There is a QR code to scan at the table. The restaurant looked and felt clean. The accessible toilet smelt like it has just been cleaned before I went in to use it. Hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes were available. I had been previously and the layout has changed to accomodate social distancing with less furniture/ tables than before. Contacless card payments only, so no cash transactions. Staff wore face masks. In addition their website says that staff are daily health screened and risk assessments are available on request. This was both my friend and mine's first time eating out since lockdown and we felt safe and relaxed during out visit. We were very pleased we went and would happily return.
